Work and Skilled Pathways (Residence)

This page explains the main skilled residence pathways in plain language, using official sources first.

The 3 main skills-based residence pathways

If you want residence through skills, Immigration NZ describes three pathways. The details matter because some allow applying for residence immediately, while others require time working in New Zealand first.

Pathway 1: Skilled Migrant Category (SMC)

SMC is a points-based residence pathway. You generally need a skilled job offer in New Zealand, and most applicants need time working here before becoming eligible.

Pathway 2: Green List (high-demand roles)

If your job is on the Green List and you meet the specific requirements, you may have a clearer residence pathway. There are two tiers: Tier 1 (Straight to Residence) and Tier 2 (Work to Residence).

Pathway 3: Sector agreements (Care Workforce and Transport)

These are targeted pathways for specific roles. Care workers and certain transport roles may qualify for a work-to-residence option after meeting time and pay conditions.
